I went to a city called Niteroi across the bay from Rio to work with a children’s charity. The charity, along with many other things, ran a football school for a group of girls. The girls lived in the favellas or shanty towns and had extremely hard lives. They lived with alcoholism and drug abuse and suffered abuse themselves, within their families.

Most of them had to take care of siblings and go to work to feed their family. One way to escape the daily hardships was to attend the football school. It gave them a sense of belonging and helped them to forget about their troubles. I documented their lives both in the favellas and at the football school, looking at their contrasting lives.
